with president obama. >> so here's -- >> this is what he has to do. he has to perform. >> he has to look more presidential than in london. he has to say the economy looks worse than it does right now. and the 47% comment he was caught making where he basically cashiered half of the country out of existence. will romney be hawned by that 47% comment? here's one of the best lines of the year, bill clinton, up in new hampshire, his old stomping grounds. here he is taking on romney. this guy is a killer these dies. let's watch clinton destroy romney. >> i couldn't believe the other day when -- when the president's opponents said that the 47% of the american people who don't pay income tax just want to hang around, be dependent on the government and, you know, we just had to wean them off of that. because they didn't want to pay income tax. now, a guy with a tax account in the caymen islands is attacking other people for not wanting -- you have to give him credit, like i said. >> i love it when they put it together. when they put it together, this guy, bunch of bumz that don't want to pay the taxe

two new national polls on the presidential race. let's check the "hardball" scoreboard. according to a new "washington post"/abc news poll, president obama has a two-point lead holding there, 49%/47%. same score in the new politico poll. obama by two, 49%/47%. "the new york times" this weekend reported on the two campaigns' ongoing debate preps. here is what they said about romney's prep. quote, mr. romney's team has concluded that the debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers he's memorized and has been practicing on aides since august. bob shrum, you have been on that particular role, preparing candidates for debate. what do you make of romney, a rather stiff customer to begin with, coming off as sort of a henny youngman or whatever, some sort of a don rickles with some zingers. i don't think of him as a zinger kind of guy where obama is expected to be left helpless. what do you make of that strategy? >> first of all, if you had it, you wouldn't announce it. it's kind of stupid. >> why are they leaking it? >> i don't know. because they're t

.s. presidential race. quote, in the point of view of his politics, if i were voting, i would vote for obama, and i believe that if obama was from caracas, he would vote for chavez. i am positive. relations between the u.s. and venezuela have been tense in recent years. neither embassy has had an ambassador since 2010. chavez himself is in a tight race for re-election. i'm rooting against him. and voters in venezuela will cast their ballots this coming sunday. >>> up next, republicans have been looking for voter fraud. guess what? they've found it, in their own campaign. after making it difficult for democrats to vote, it's the republicans who are to blame for the biggest case of registration fraud in the country. and that's coming up in a minute. >>> you're watching "hardball," the place for politics. aler witr fiona. tell me fiona, who's having a big tire event? your ford dealer. who has 11 major brands to choose from? your ford dealer. who's offering a rebate? your ford dealer. who has the low price tire guarantee... affording peace of mind to anyone who might be in the market for a new set of t

in the show. for now the presidential campaign has been reshaped in a number of ways. is is the way obama achieved this milestone is very nonsocialist, actually. under obama the economy has created about $ 967,000 private sector jobs. so if obama is in fact a socialist, he's not very good at it. second in, romney's standard stump speech, we've now had quote 43 street months with ununemployment over 8%. we are now under 8%. and third, this is probably the most important for the campaign. the debate was only two days ago. today is friday. the debate was wednesday. but this is a big enough jobs report, striking enough, that it has turned the whole national conversation. romney could have used a few more days of momentum. now instead of having a weekend where anyone can talk about his debate, the jobs report is dominating the headlines. >> joining me now is a senior fellow and was a member of the president obama's debt commission. she knows more about budgets i think than anyone in the world. and sam stein political editor and white house correspondent. thank you for being here. >> alice, 7.8

," and the honorable michael nutter, mayor of philadelphia and presidential surrogate in this tough campaign. gentlemen, thank you for joining us. always go to the elected official first. mr. mayor, what needs to be done right now to right this ship, to get obama back on a winning course? >> well, the president is on a winning course and as you laid out earlier, chris, with all the things that mitt romney either lied about or denied about, what we call that in philadelphia is just lying, denying, and alibiing. and if that's what you're going to spend your time doing and focus on style, then you'll have a pretty decent night. president obama is focused on substance. let me give you three quick numbers here, chris, which i think ultimately is what this election is all about. 31 straight months of job growth here in the united states of america. 5.1 million jobs created in the private sector. and unemployment at 7.8%, the lowest it's been since the president took the oath of office in january of 2009. things are moving in the right direction. this campaign is moving forward. we've got 30 days to go, and w

of last night's debate, what was true and what was not, turn the tables now? can barack obama win by getting out the word he didn't get out last night? and both are big questions tonight that might just decide this presidential election. i'm joined by governor ed rendell and ron reagan, both msnbc analysts. this is a tough blog by a guy who has been very strong for obama over the years. andrew sullivan of the daily beast. he wrote this last night, basically just at the end of the debate. this was a dissaster for the president for the key people he needs to reach. his effete wonkish lectures may have jolted a lot of independents into giving romney a second look. obama tyke looked tired, even bored. he kept looking down. he wasn't there. the person with authority on that stage was romney. offered by one of the lamest moderators ever and seized with relish. this was romney the salesman and my gut tells me he sold a few voters on a change tonight. it's beyond depressing, but it's true. gentlemen, that's a tough assessment. it's matched by this, i'm showing you one of the strongest hea

and the latest nbc wall street journal poll. >> a new poll from telemundo, obama is up by 50, howard, among hispanics. let's go to howard fineman. back to my big question. he's had a terrible month or two. he does not look presidential. bill clinton and the president have been able to build up the notion that the economy's better than we thought. 57% of the people think that the economy is getting better. what a dramatic advantage. >> well, i agree with steve. this is mitt's moment. he said months ago to supporters just wait until i get on the stage with the president. just wait until i get to confront him, when i get to explain my version of reality versus his. that's when i'm going to shine. and he has to do it tonight. i agree with you and steve, that he has to be specific. he has to be detailed. partly because people haven't warmed to mitt romney as a person. they don't really trust him yet as a person. all the more important that he set out a specific plan, that makes sense. and that he does it in a humane way. i agree with steve. he has to be -- it's okay if he's serious but he has to

is a poor training ground for presidential candidates because it's a weird culture up there. maybe the republicans run was not a good preparation for general election this year. anyway, in swing states the obama campaign has bombarded voters, as you said, with this powerful ad going after romney for his 47% putdown. let's take a look. >> 47% of the americans who vote for the president who are dependent, who believe they're victims, who believe the government has to care for them, who believes they're entitled to health care, food, housing, you name it, and they will vote for this president no matter what. so my job is not to worry about those -- i'll never take care of them. they should take care responsibility and take care of themselves. >> you look at this analytical, only three or four breaks, romney would be ahead right now, breaks going to obama's side. the romney performance overseas when he blew that thing with cameron. the masterful performance by bill clinton where he reset the clock on the economy. of course, this 47%. these breaks have been going toward obama, haven't t
